SPUD.ca is seeking an exceptional Engineering Development Manager to execute against ambitious software engineering projects. This role will be remote-first, and is open to candidates based anywhere in Canada. As an Engineering Development Manager, you will participate in setting the vision and direction for the current and next generation of SPUD’s software systems. In this role, you will be managing several projects with the goal of releasing applications and features for SPUD’s eGMS platform. The ideal candidate is a well-versed technical manager with proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, all while making an impact contributing to a cross-functional team. Your ability to creatively collaborate and execute team goals will directly contribute to the company mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable e-grocery. Duties Responsibilities: Continue the development of exceptional technical teams and leaders through hiring, training, coaching, and performance management. Focused on the Core Product teams, provide leadership for all parts of the software development and deployment lifecycle. Continuously drive process improvements in collaboration with the Product team to create an efficient and streamlined project cycle. Act as a bridge between Engineering and the Product team. Create predictability through understanding the work required and providing accurate estimates given human, scope, and time requirements. Through your previous experiences and attending Stand Ups, engage in continuous improvement of communication between Engineering and Project Management. Help drive timely decisions through offering clarity regarding the priorities of all Engineering teams. Leverage the strengths of developers and reassign and rebalance if needed, with the goal of creating strong engineering teams and, ultimately, product offerings for our clients. Work with product management to create effective sprint cycles that ensure the delivery of projects on time and within budget. In partnership with Product management, balance product aspirations with engineering realities through assessing client needs, scope, timelines, and budget. Provide non-technical stakeholders with status updates with the ability to explain technical concepts in non-technical language. Collaborate with other team leads to translate overarching business strategy and platform design into engineering tasks. Additional duties as required. At least 8 years of relevant engineering and leadership experience. Experience on a technology leadership team, with at least 5 years of experience leading cross-functional teams – ideally managing software engineers and technical leads. Hands on software development background including design patterns, data structures, and test driven development - you need to be able to read and write code yourself. Proven ability to drive end-to-end solutions across multiple components and platforms. Experience managing large customer-facing project teams and budgets, ideally for a SaaS or eCommerce company. Experience building integrations with 3rd party systems and building large scale distributed systems. Ability to design large-scale, complex applications with excellent run-time characteristics such as low-latency, fault-tolerance, and high availability. You are exceptional at team execution, addressing bottlenecks efficiently, and removing hurdles to enable each team member to operate at their highest level of productivity. You have a strong sense of ownership with projects, from conception to release. You are optimistic and work well with a variety of personalities. Superb interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate with large multi-functional technical and business teams in a distributed environment – verbally and via electronic communications. Comfortable with ambiguity, change, and thrive in fast-paced, dynamic, startup-like environment. Self-driven with the ability to prioritize and pivot as needed. What's in it for you?
